چکیده

A parallax method to determine transverse velocity in a gravitationally lensed system is described. Using the annual motion of the Earth around the Sun allows us to probe the local structure of the magnification map that, under certain assumptions, can be used to infer the effective transverse velocity. The method is applied to OGLE data for QSO2237+0305 and the velocity value is estimated to be about 15 ± 10 kms if attributed to the lensing galaxy or about 420±300 kms if attributed to the quasar. We find this estimate unreasonably small and conclude that we have not measured a parallax effect. We give a short list of properties that a system should possess to allow a successful implementation of this method.

Distance of W3(OH) by VLBI annual parallax measurement

The most powerful tool for measuring distances within our Galaxy is the annual parallax. We carried out phase-referencing VLBI observations of H2O masers in the star forming region W3(OH) with respect to the extragalactic continuum source ICRF 0244+624 to measure their absolute proper motions. The measured annual parallax is 0.484 ± 0.004 milli-arcseconds which corresponds to a distance of 2.07...

A New Method for Obtaining Binary Pulsar Distances and its Implications for Tests of General Relativity

We demonstrate how measuring orbital period derivatives can lead to more accurate distance estimates and transverse velocities for some nearby binary pulsars. In many cases this method will estimate distances more accurately than is possible by annual parallax, as the relative error decreases as t. Unfortunately, distance uncertainties limit the degree to which nearby relativistic binary pulsar...

iPTF16geu: A multiply imaged, gravitationally lensed type Ia supernova.

We report the discovery of a multiply imaged, gravitationally lensed type Ia supernova, iPTF16geu (SN 2016geu), at redshift z = 0.409. This phenomenon was identified because the light from the stellar explosion was magnified more than 50 times by the curvature of space around matter in an intervening galaxy. We used high-spatial-resolution observations to resolve four images of the lensed super...

Gravitationally Lensed μJy Radio Sources towards Galaxy Clusters

Galaxy clusters are expected to gravitationally lens background radio sources. However, due to the smaller surface density of radio sources, when compared to optical galaxies, such lensed events are rare. For an example, it is expected that there is no lensed radio source due to foreground galaxy clusters in the 1.4 GHz VLA FIRST survey. However, at the μJy level, the surface density of radio s...

We present results from a search to detect radio emission at 1.4 GHz from gravitationally lensed arcs towards galaxy clusters. Using the FIRST survey observations of galaxy cluster fields, we have clearly detected 1.4 GHz emission at the location of bright arc towards the galaxy cluster Abell 370. The possibility that this emission is associated with a projected galaxy superimposed on the arc c...
